" MAORIS ARRESTED

(By Telegraph.—Press Association} OiSBORNE, 11th August. Police investigations into a series of burglaries in the Waiapu district culminated in the arrest of three Maori men and two.youths. Within the. knowledge of the police six burglaries were committed since the beginning of last month principally at the stores of the Waiapu Earners' Company, the value of the goods stolen being £6O. Sergeant Carroll and Constable Olsen raided a pa where two of the men concerned'lived, and recovered a portion of the stolen goods, but the birds had flown. Police officers set out before daylight upon an arduous ride into the heart of the Raukumara ranges, and after a journey of 45 miles over rough bush trails arrived back with two prisoners and the balance of the stolen property. In the Police Court at Awanui George Taiapa, Hamara Temaroa, and Charlie Ward pleaded guilty to the burglaries and were committed to the Supreme Court, for sentence. Another native, Philip Matenga, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment for receiving stolen propertv, and two yours implicated in the thefts were sent to the Children's Court.
