DUNEDIN, This Day. At the Supreme Court, John Henry Appleby, of Palmerston South, aged 63, was sentenced to' four years’ hard labour for carnal knowledge of a girl aged 10. Mr Justice Ostler -said that there was little evidence on any ground for mitigation ol the usual penalty of seven years, but in view of the jury’s recommendation, he could, without sacrificing public interests, give effect to the recommendation.
