COLLISION WITH DESTROYER

ROME 6th August. -The' coastal submarine Fl 4, carrying out attacking exercises seven miles west of the island of Brioni, suddenly emerged / under the . bows of the destroyer ..- Missouri. A collision followed and the Fl 4 sank in twenty fathoms. The weather is unfavourable for rescue, but four divers have gone- to the spot/ » , ' Measures have been, taken to supply air, and acoustic connection is being maintained .by means of special instruments for submarine signals. THIRTY-FOUR ON THE SUBMARINE LONDON, 7th August. The ‘.‘Evening Standard’’ Trieste correspondent believes 34 are still alive on the - Fl 4. Salvage is most difficult owing to rough weather. It is feared that operations will be long. COMMUNICATION CEASES Australian Preea Association.—United Service. i (Received Bth August, 12.25 p.m.) ROME, 7th August. It was officially announced, that the sunken submarine had been raised within forty feet of the surface, hut communication with the imprisoned crew had ceased some hours before. The weather has improved. There are two officers and 29 men aboard. /The cruiser Aquila is standing by.
