POULTRY INDUSTRY
EGGS FOR LONDON MARKET A GOVERNMENT GUARANTEE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Pursuant to its policy of assisting the small farmer the Government, has decided to give poultry-keepers "to guarantee on the basis of £3 5s a gross per case of 30 dozen eggs on the London market. On announcing the decision yesterday the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. O. J. Hawken, said that for some time post there had been warnings that the poul-try-keeping industry ! was reaching the stage at which there w° u hl have been an over-supply of eggs on the New Zealand market, and it had been evident that the poultry-keeper could find other markets the industry would very shortly languish and fall back to a point at which the local market requirements would be the limit' of production. There was no reason at all, continued the Minister, why the New Zealand poultry-keeper should not be able to compete on the London market with those of other countries. At the price that had been realised; there for 'eggs offered at a period when New Zealand: eggs, would reach tlie'-irharket, the Government hopes that the fillip which tho-guarantee will impart to the industry will give poultry-keepers in the Dominion confidence to extend their, operations and increase the production of eggs and poultry to proportions which have not' hitherto existed.
