SAMOAN UNREST

STATEMENT BY MR NELSON

(United Press Association!

AUCKLAND, 4th Feb. •Mr O. F. Nelson, after consultation with his solicitor, Sir John Findlav, published in the "Star" a lengthy statement with regard to the Samo.in situation, reserving criticism of the Royal Commission's report until the evidence is made available by the Government. Replying to the Premier's statement that "the Administrator's experimental native copra selling polity was largelv responsible for the present movement," Mr Nelson says the Prime Minister knows the Administrator did not start handling native copra until March, 1927. He knows the trouble in Samoa began long before that. His (Mr Nelson's) first complaints to the Premier were made in September, 1926, and the trouble was well started before then. "The Prime Minister well knows the Administrator'* dealings in copra were mere retaliation against myself. Prohibition has nothing to do with the present unrest, and Air C'oates knows that." Mr Nelson protest? against sending extra police to Samoa, as unnecessary.
