THEFT OF NEARLY £SOOO

CLERK PLEADS GUILTY

(United Press Association)

WELLINGTON, This Day

Fear of dismissal because of the disappearance of substantial sums of money while lie was in charge of the office, embezzlement to hide the deficiency, heavy betting on horse races in a frantic effort to retrieve his position, and then further defalcations extending over a period of years—these were the reasons which Harry Stephen Liversage, a clerk, aged 35, gave for his appearance in Court to-day on a charge of having stolen nearly £SOOO from Joseph Nathan and Company. Tile total amount involved was £4804 os. Id., which disappeared between June, 1921, and 3rd of this month. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
