STATE ELECTIONS

IN UNITED STATES

SOME BITTER CAMPAIGNS (By Rlactrio Tnlosrraph—- Copyright) ItnairiiUan * NZ Cable Association! NEW YORK, 7th Nov.

The elections take place in the various States to-morrow, the chief interest centring in.the eastern section, where the issues, though local, have been bitterly contested. New York State will elect--51 mayors and ' the .Stale Assembly Governor. Messrs Smith and Roosevelt (son of a former President) have enlivened the campaign by a personal quarrel, the latter charging the Governor with countenancing gambling in the State Capitol. It is believed that if a Democratic Assembly is returned, it will bo indicative of henv the State will vote in the Presidential contest in 1928.

A sharp contest is raging in Kentucky over the governorship. The Democratic nominee opposes horse racing and organized Labour is therefore supporting Mr Simpson, the Republican nominee. New Jersey elects 60 members of the Assembly, and 7 Senators, and it is believed to be a foregone conclusion that the State Legislature, which is now preponderantly Republican, will remain so. Detroit is torn by a vituperative campaign for the city mayoralty, Mayor Smith, who seeks re-election favouring the none-enforeement of prohibition, while his opponent, Mr .Lodge, lias declined to announce his policy. '■ The Ku Klux Klan and churches are taking an active part in the Philadelphia municipal contest, which is between a Republican candidate for the mayoralty, Mr Mckey, and an independent citizens’ candidate, Mr .Moore. The issue is the honesty of the party organizations.
