DEVOURED BY SHARKS PASSENGERS "ON~FOUNDERED STEAMER (Bv Electric iUegraph—Copyright) (Publißhed in "The Timet") MANILA, 7th Juno. Survivors of the wreck of the Philippine steamer Negros, caused by the recent typhoon, arrived aboard the steamer .Masbate. They declared that the victims of the. disaster were devoured by sharks while clinging to the wreckage, exploding the opinion that they were drowned. Eye-witnesses describe how sharks hovered close while the ship foundered. Immediately following the passengers' precipitation into the furious sea they fought their way to the pieces of wreckage to which the victims were clinging and snatched them away like flies. Cries could be heard above "the roar of the waves. The opinion is advanced that a school of sharks was near when the ship foundered, and attracted by the. sounds swam towards their prey. One survivor, who was cast on the top of the wreckage, described eating his clothes, which satisfied his hunger and left no ill effects.
