Sons; and metalling 78 chains Pakawau-Pu-ponga rdad, H. N. L. Hawkins. Considering the showery weather now prevailing .good progress is being made on belli those works, especially the former, where two lorries and six or seven men are employed. If the weather comes in very wet, trie formation is likely to cut up badly under the heavy traffic. The weaker places are the embankments on the second contract. The contract for the supply of 200 yards of metal, Ring's Cutting-Raituna, bridge, will be commenced next week. A commencement .has been made on tlio contract for the supply’ of 200 yards of metal, Bonny DpCh.road. Tills metal being for patching purposes only on a long stretch of road; wet weather will cause the traffic to be detrimental, to the i bad surface, ■ and should . the. contract proceed satisfactorily I would like to see an extension of the quantity. The three men. engaged completed the temporary bridges over the Onetaua and Fletcher’s creeks on the PnkawauI’uponga road, and since then the new read has .been in continual use by the. travelling public, The bridges, arc of course cnly temporary structures. The low eastern approach to the. Ironstone Creek bridge, Parapara, where, every flood used to sweep across the road, wash the metal away and block traffic for a time, has been raised up about 3ft, and is being metalled. A bad point, at the old tailing heap further along is being widened out at the same time.

Metalling repairs have ben clone in the Pakawan bush, also on the mud flat towards Kaikoha.. Boulders and shingle have been carted for underpinning the retaining wall at the Paknwau bridge. A small groin has been built to prevent erosion at the Seaford Creek bridge. It have prepared an estimate to widen out. all cuttjngs to a width of 20 feet and effect other improvements on the Rockvilfo road between Dales Creek and the Rockville bridge. The road on the dining table will need metalling dr at least patching as well as other work.

To paint the fence around the Soldiers Memorial -will cost about £7 or £3. The paint is in fair order, and one good coat should be sufficient. Tt was resolved that the Engineer have power to put on extra metal up to 100 yards on Bonny Doon road; that tenders be called for ploughing where necessary and grading the Rockville Roacl from Wigzells corner to Post Office corner, and also metal at per yard : and that the memorial fence he painted.

Many different methods of overcoming the glare of car headlights have been introduced dining the past few years. The latest device to lie patented opens up a new avenue of research in this connection. The new device is 'based on the fact that light has (he effect of varying the conductivity of selenium. A selenium cell is fixed to the car in such a position that the light from the headlamps of an approaching car can strike it. The cell is wired up with a high tension hat levy and a relay, and tho result of light from other headlamps meeting it is to effect a current flowing through it and through the rclav, which in turn completes. ,n second circuit through the car buttery and nil' electromagnet. The latter automatically operates ihe dipping mechanism and alters the angle of the lamp setting.
