AN EVENING WITH THE VIOLONCELLO

TREVOR DE CLIVE LOWE’S RECITAL LARGE GATHERING AT SCHOOL OF MUSIC It, was a very responsive audience which greeted Trevor do Clive Lowe, 'cellist, al the School of -Music last evening. Many had been looking forward with keen interest to an hour or so with the, violoncello, and they were not, disappointed. Neither could the recitalist have been for be was accorded a very tine reception by a crowded house. It Wits an evening of melodic loveliness. Trevor de Clive Lowe has the necessary temperament. lie plays with fine taste, and his renderings of the captivating harmonies were fully deserving of the hearty applause accorded. Perhaps the outstanding item was the Frenchman SaintnSaens’ concerto for 'Cello in A Minor. The allegro with which the concerto opens was brilliantly played. Miss L. Caverhill supplied the orchestral accompaniment on the pianoforte. Her (Saturation in poetic mood and flawless ease were also outstanding features in this and in the opening item, Sonata for 'Cello and Piano (Edvard Greig), which at once captivated the audience. Here, too, Trevor de Clive Lowe played with high distinction, and the enchanting beauty of the composition was delightfully revealed. Miss V. Wilding was the aecninpaniste for the 'cello soli. Her part also was lifted to a very high plane by her exquisite taste and restraint. and especially her rendering of the fluctuant, elusive music. It was a wide selection made by the ’cellist, but. the large audience showed in u very unmistakable way that every single item was greatly appreciated. Air Ernest Short’s inspiring singing came as an enlivening interlude in the centre of each section of the programme. He was heartily recalled on both occasions.
