CLOSING ROADS
A LOCAL BODY’S POWERS
i (United Pres* Association.)
PALMERSTON N„ This Day. Has a local body power to close Toads apart from the main highways to heavy traffic? was a question asked of the chairman of No. 9 District Highway Council (Mr F. Hannah) at the annual meeting at Palmerston North. This contentious point as to where local bodies stand in the matter since the advent of the main highways regulations aroused an animated but rather fruit-.' less discussion.
The chairman remarked that he could not give a reply. Even lawyers were tangled up over it. A member (Mr Drew) said that certain roads in the Manawatu county apart from the main highways had been closed to traffic because they were being “simply cut to pieces.” Now lorry owners said the County Council. had no authority to close such roads. It was essential that local bodies ascertain where they stood in the matter. After further discussion the chairman said it was really a county matter and thiy must leave it at that.
