TEACHERS AND PARLIAMENT
LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR CAMPAIGN
(United Press Association.)
WELLINGTON. This Day
Shall school teachers be permitted to stand for Parliament? was a question before the Wellington Education Board to-day in reference to an inquiry on the subject made to the Department. The reply was that it was a matter for the Board, not the Deparment.
A motion that applications by teachers for leave of absence to contest- Parliamentary elections he refused was lostby six votes to three. One member said that if a teacher wanted to enter public life he should certainly resign. Others held that it- was highly undesirable to interfere with the ambition of schoolteachers. It-was pointed out- that railway servants were allowed to stand foi Parliament.
