STRANDING OF THE MAITAI
INQUIRY OPENED.

- - AUCKLAND, Feb. 17. An inquiry commenced to-day into the stranding ofHhe steamer Maitai at Raro- , tonga on Christmas E~ve. Mr Mays, for "the Marine Department, said that'if the evidence showed that the captain acte-3 tinder instructions of the owners in endeavouring to pick up two anchors, he might have lo ask pennission '.to cite the owners.
Charles McLean,' captain of the Maitai, stated that there was the usual ocean swell on'the occasion. The-niglrt- was calm. .After failing - to recover the anchor he put the Maitai's head, to sea. Afterwards the vessel, stopped, and the starboard anchor, was let go- Shortly afterwards- the steamer tailed round, and. the chief officer called out that the cable had parted. He ordered full steam ahead, but Hie vessel refused to answer her helm, and' he- considered she touched v bottom the moment before the order was - given-. The steamer then grounded heavily, and remained fast, though-the engines weVe kept going.
