(Sir William Ramsay, K.C.8., F.R-.5., has distinguished himself by researches into the constituents of the air ; in eonjunction with Lord Rayleigh he discovered argon. Besides discovering helium, he also detected iu the air the unknown elements to which he has given the Greek names of neon, krypton, and xenon. Ee was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, ISC4.
