FIRES

A PRIVATE HOTEL DESTROYED. (United Press Association.' CHRISTCHURCH. May 20. The Glasgow Coffee Palace and pri:vate hotel,° in Manchester-street, was destroved by fire early this evening. It was a* two-storeyed building, containing fourteen rooms, the first floor and ground floor beinit used ?.s a restaurant. Ihe fire originated near the bathroom. When the brigade arriyed the flames had gained a solid hold on the wooden framework. The blaze was extinguished verv promptly, but the building was practically gutted. The furniture and fittings were insured for £250 in the Norwich Union Office. The tenant estimates his loss at £IOO.

A GOVERNMENT LOSS

AUCKLAND, May 20

A six-roomed house belonging to the Government, and occupied by Captain Mickle, of the Permanent Artillery, Auckland Division, was completely destroyed by fire at North Head to-night. All "the contents were practically destroyed. The furniture was insured in the Commercial Union Office for £250. The loss is estimated at £4OO. Whether the house is insured by the Government or not is uncertain. The dwelling was valued at £6OO.

The building was within one hundred yards of the main magazine of the forts. This created alarm in the neighbourhood, and a gang of artillerymen was employed in covering the ventilators of the magazine, and preventing the ingress of any sparks.
