(From the Australian Papers.) FIGHTING IN CHINESE TURKESTAN. A despatch from Kulga, Chinese Turkestan, reports that in a battle between the Government troops and the revolutionary forces the latter were victorious. The fighting resulted in great slaughter, 1500 Government troops and 200 rebels being killed. Besides the loss in killed and wounded the Government forces had 80 prisoners, taken. MODEL TENEMENTS IN PARIS. The municipality of Paris is seeking legislative sanction to borrow a loan of £tf,oCo,ooo with which to erect model tenements for the labouring classes. The movement of the man's heart is barely discernible, and the doctors have been enabled to keep him alive only by means of food administered through a tube. AUTHENTICITY OF THE BIBLE. With the opening af the Biblical Institute of the Catholic Church, the Vatican hopes .to end permanently the questions regarding the authenticity of the Bible, and to establish the contention that modern science has not disproved many of its passages. The magnificent palace in the Via Pilotta, which will be the home of the institute, and which has been opened with impressive ceremonies, will collect every available document bearing on the authenticity of the Book of Books. The library is capable of accommodating 100,000 volumes, and will include the earliest papyrus documents and cuniform inscriptions down to the original writings of the Apostles. "GOD IS ON OUR SIDE.'; Another batch of suffragettes, who took part in the window-wrecking campaign a few weeks ago, were sentenced last week, some to four months' imprisonment, while others who had previously been convicted received six months. One, Mrs Alice Monck Mason, a grandmother of 68, showed her readiness to suffer for the cause by protesting against being released. Judge Wallace directed that"she should be bound over to keep the peace for 12 months. Another of the window-wreckers, when sentenced, exclaimed, "Gcd is on our side, and I can do the four months with an easy conscience." "RACE SUICIDERS." The accusation that the Social Democrats are not patriotic is brought against that bodv in a book'which has just been published bv Professor Julius Wolf, of the Universitv of Breslau. Professor Wolf's complaint against the Democrats is in effect that they are a lot of "race suiciders," and have gone on strike against furnislrlntr material for the German armv. The Catholic Centreists, de. Clares the professor, are providing the country with most of its future defenders and figures are given to prove this statement.
