Mr Pierponit- Morgan- claims- that he now 'holds Gainsborough's portrait of the Duchess of Devonshire, which was once stolen from Agnew's, in. London, and was later found in Chicago. The authenticity of the picture is challenged by another Duchess of Devonshire portrait in Spink's gallery. London. The latter's credibility depends unon a written statement by Mr John Foster, a former general merchant, of Sydney, darted July 16, 1878, the owner of t'he picture. If Mr picture is genuine, then Mr Morgan's, is a- replica bv Gainsborough, finished by Sir Thomas Lawrence. The supposed 'birth and parentage of Mr Foster's father are said to account for the Duchess entrusting the picture to him.
