THE OLD PEOPLE'S HOME.
THE WAIMEA-STREET BUILDING. TO BE BURNT DOWN. A deputation representing tbo Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and consisting of Mr H. Baigent (Chairman of the Board) and Messrs Bisley, Grace, and Field (members of the Board), waited on the City Council last night in reference to the <nsposal of the present Old People's Home in Waimea street., Mr Baigent said that it was thought that the Council might co-operate with the Board in allowing the old building to be burnt down as? it stood, only the iron, windows, and such other portions as were worth saving, being removed. The Board were exercising great care in regard to the removal from the old to the new Home. It was felt that there would be no danger if the burning down was done un der the supervision of the City Engineer, and in the presence of the Fire Brigade. Mr Grace considered that there would be no danger now that there was such an increased pressure of water from the new weir. The Mayor strongly approved of the proposal to destroy the old building, and would even prefer that the iron he thoroughly fumigated. He was sure the Council would help th Board in the matter, and moved thai the Board's request be granted. Cr. Turner seconded the motion. The City Engineer suggested that the building first bo blown down with explosives. This would give the Fire Brigade an opportunity for practice in putting out fire :n a demolished building. Crs. Hampson and Pettit having spoken, the motion was carried unanimously. ]\fr Baigent thanked the Mayor and Councillors for so readily meeting the Hospital Board.
