THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
■ THE NELSON CONTESTS. THE POLLING. Polling in cennection for the election of a Mayor and nine Councillors for 'he City of Nelson is proceeding to-day. The day is beautifully fine, and in view of the great interest that has been aroused in municipal matters a record poll is anticipated. The Returning Officer (Mr A- R, Smart) hopes to announce the result of the Mayoral electiun from the Municipal Buildings at 9 o'clock this evening. The voting for the Councillor?, however, may not be known before a late hour, in view of the large number of candidates, aud the probable heavy polliug. In yesterday's issue a bogus advertisement appeared stating that Mr Fanzclow would addiess the municipal electors at Richmond, and that Mr Cross would preside. An individual came into this office in the usual course and handed the advertisement over the counter with cash. So far as the ofiice has been aole to identify the advertiser, Mr Fanzelow has been given all details, and it is hoped that he will be able to proceed further in dealing with the practical joker. Such fooi tricks are intolerable during municipal elections, when citizens are earnestly endeavouring to do their best in the common interest, and we trust that the perpetrator of this senseless joke will be discovered and punished. Both Mr Fanzelow and Mr Cross have our sympathy in the matter, and we feel . sure that Mr Fanzelow wili not suffer in his candidature from the underhand methods of opponents. Newspapers are peculiarly liable to be victimised by such practical jokers as those under notice, ancl unless the "little game" be stopped it may be necessary, however inconvenient, to require all advertisements to be duly authenticated in writing before insertion.
