TENNIS COMPETITION PLAY DISCUSSED

UNITED PLAYERS SUGGEST WITHDRAWAL FROM SUB-ASSN.

The proposal sponsored by the President of the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association (Mr A. C. Fraser) that the strain of tennis match play in North Canterbury be eased by playing competitions fixtures on alternate Saturdays found favour with members of the United Tennis (Rangiora Bowling Tennis, and Croquet Club) at the annual meeting held on Monday. More than that, several members were in favour of going a step further and withdrawing altogether from match play. Another motion was to the effect that the Sub-Association be disbanded. The chairman (Mr I. Tweedie), who is also secretary of the Sub-Association, explained the idea of the proposal. He said that it was felt by several clubs that there were too many matches and a few players were getting all the games. If the proposal was carried at the annual meeting of the Sub-Associa-tion, clubs would arrange friendly games for themselves. After a considerable amount of discussion a motion was put to the meeting: "That the delegates to the SubAssociation endeavour to have the matches dropped altogether for this season, and failing that, that the club fall in with the decision of the SubAssociation." This motion was freely discussed by the members present. Some thought that the Sub-Association should be disbanded altogether, and that if competition matches were played) the United Club should take no part in them. An amendment was then added to the original motion, "that the SubAssociation be disbanded, and should it carry on the United Club break' away." This amendment did not find favour with the meeting, and the question was raised that if competition matches were played and the United Club took no part in them, members might not be eligible to take part in the North Canterbury Championships, if held. It was also asked Avhether the, Club would have to pay affiliation fees if it took no part in competition games. After the amendment had been freely discussed), the mover withdrew it, and the original motion was carried, the opinion of the meeting being that it would be a good thing if matches were abolished for the season, but whatever the decision of the Sub-Association, the club would fall in with it.
