Address On Management Of Children At Rangiora
Miss Do«en Dolton, lecturer in child psychology under the auspices of the Association for Country Education, gave the second of a series of lectures on child management, in the Parish Hall on Monday afternoon. Miss Dolton told those present that often children were scared by their parents or teachers to obtain better discipline. She condemned' this practice as being cruel, barbarous and~meffective. Children who were frightened in early years often developed into shy, stammering and nervous adolescents. The result of this implanting of fear into the child's mind leads to the distrust of the parents by the child. "Occasionally there are times when it is permissible to implant fear into children," said the speaker. "I am referring to times when it is to get them to fear such things as are unhealthy.
In all their contacts with their children parents should reason with them and gain their confidence. Unfamiliar things should be explained as lucidly and in as patient a way as possible. Miss Dolton's next public lecture will be given on Monday night at eight o' clock.
