FIRE IN RIVERBED

When the fire siren sounded on Saturday shortly after midday it was to summon volunteers to assist in quelling a grass fire which had broken out in the Ashley riverbed, and which, fanned by a strong easterly breeze, threatened to get out of control. The fire started near the east end of the rifle range, and spread in a westerly direction for about a mile. Public works employees who were near the scene failed in an effort to control the flames, and the addition of several carloads of helpers from the township soon had the desired effect.

Very little damage was done. The flames spread across the rifle range, and right over the target butt. A shed nearby containing targets and equipment escaped damage. The spread of the fire was partially controlled by the earthworks which are a part of the river control scheme.

DAMAGE TO POSTERS

Wilful damage to posters in the town is becoming an increasing source of annoyance to the management of the Regent Theatre. Apparently there are some individuals in Rangiora who, probably through sheer thoughtlessness or for some obscure purpose, delight in tearing posters down. In view of the fact that many of these posters are actually created and produced in Rangiora, the product of many hours of careful thought and labour, the reported vandalism has caused so much loss that the management is now offering a reward of £1 for information .which will lead to the conviction of the offenders.

LAST NIGHT’S DANCE
