T.U. Opinion Divided On Overtime Proposal
AUCKLAND, Fri. (P.A.). —Trade union opinion of the proposals by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holland) _to eliminate, in approved cases, income and wage taxes on overtime earnings is sharply divided here. A strong section of the industrial movement would seemingly welcome such action, but others view it questioningly from the viewpoint of basic trade union policy.
“Our aim is the elimination of overtime and not its encouragement,” said Mr W. T. Quealy, a member of the executive of the Auckland Trades Council. “Inclusion of overtime in earnings might lead to it becoming part of basic hours.”

More inducement for working overtime would be provided by the National Party proposal for the Government as an experiment for two years to absorb the difference between overtime and ordinary rates of pay for approved house building and' ancillary industries.
