First 1 Charges Of Kind in Dominion
WELLINGTON, Thu. (P.A.)— The trial of three men on charges of roguery and vagabondage was continued in the Supreme Court today before the Chief Justice (Sir Humphrey O’Leary).
It was the first occasion in New Zealand on which such charges have been laid against persons travelling in a car.
Accused are Clifford Fox, 27, carpenter; William John Graham Lee, 24, labourer; and Jack Stewart Wagner. 20, hairdresser.
They are charged that, being suspected persons, they frequented the streets of Martinborough with felonious intent.
Police witnesses yesterday gave evidence that the three accused were seen travelling round Martinborough in a car at various times during the night of August 30, between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. the following morning. Acting-Detective John Craig Baker said in evidence today that a patrol car in which he was travelling that night had followed Fox’s car, for which he had been instructed to watch. The car had been stopped and searched, but no housebreaking implements had been found. Witness said Fox and Lee were well known to the police, but Wagner was not, apart from the fact that he was consorting with the others.
