Second 2- Figure Price
Carrying the colours of the brothers, Messrs Albert and Edgar Wood, the last-named of Whangarei, Major scored a convincing win in the Hikurangi Handicap. He firs came into the picture when he made a determined forward move crossing the top two furlongs from home.
This run enabled him to follow Brucena and Foxtavia into the straight and then hit the front at the distance and hold on to score by a length and a half.
The early running was made by Alpenza, from Brucena, Reveltide and Royal Reserve.
The favourite Lone Star got away badly and raced at the tail of the field for six furlongs.
Foxtavia moved up with Major going across the top. Encomiast was near the rear of the field until a furlong from home. He then unwound a brilliant finishing burst, but had no chance with the winner.
Foxtavia returned his supporters a double-figure dividend on the place machine.
Brucena was fourth and then came Lone Star, which finished on well, Robin Rex, Lord Jeltin, Reveltide, His Grace and Alpenza.
