Double - Figure Dividend

The principal event of the day, the mile and a quarter Whangarei Cup, proved a triumph for the comparatively little-fancied * Silver Treasure, which won by a 'length and a half and paid a double-figure dividend, i Silver Treasure raced near the rear of the field until four furlongs from home, where he came into the picture with a forward move which carried him into second place a length behind Lady Finis. He followed the leader into the, straight and hit the front just outside the last furlong.

Beaute challenged on the inside, but made little impression on the Silver Stick six-year-old, which was well ridden by jockey Hooton. Silver Treasure was eighth favourite in a field of 13.

Lady Finis, Beaute, and Beau Rosa were the first to show out, but onde the field had settled down, Take-a-Lot had taken over command.

He led past the stands from Lady Finis and Beaute, with Paul and Saffron Walden following a length back. Martial Song was squeezed back to last going round the bottom bend. Along the back Lady Finis was a length clear, with Silver Treasure and Martial Song making a pronounced forward move.

Entering the top stretch Lady Finis, Silver Treasure, Martial Song and Take-a-Lot were almost abreast, followed by Saffron Walden, Beaute and Beau Rosa.

Lady Finis was first to turn for home from Silver Treasure.

Silver Treasure quickly gained control and never really looked like being overtaken.

Beaute beat Beau Rosa, which finished strongly, by threequarters of a length for second money. Take-a-Lot was fourth and then came Lady Finis. Saffron Walden, Gay Coronach, The Bat, Mignonette, Martial Song and Paul.
