WHANGAREI RACES OPEN

PERFECT conditions prevailed for the opening of the Whangarei Racing Club’s spring meeting at Kensington lark The summer sun, which has blessed Northland foi days, was again overhead, but, fortunately for the large number of patrons, its fire was dimmed by a screen of light cloud which came in with a deliciously cool easterly breeze.

The course was in perfect order. A splendid sole of grass acted as a cushion on what must have been a very hard ground. Fast times were inevitable in the circumstances. The scene in and about the stands was colourful. Most ladies chose cool ensembles in spring shades and the men, too, were clad for comfort. For the second time photo-finish apparatus was operating. Both divisions of the first event, the Maiden Stakes, were won rather easily. In the first division Cimbrette jumped away very smartly and was never afterwards headed. He was closely attended by Black Melody and Beverley Hills in the early stages, but going across the top was joined by Boy Blue. The pair were three lengths clear of Merry Widow, Beverley Hills and Satisfree. Cimbrette was a clear three lengths in front of Boy Blue, Merry Widow and Beverley Hills coming into the straight, and in the run to the judge increased

his advantage to four lengths. Boy Blue beat Beverley Hills by two lengths for second place. Pursue was fourth and he was followed by Merry Widow, Satisfree, Shameless, and Archbishop. In the second division Sherwood Maid hit the front after a furlong, was two lengths clear crossing the top into the straight, and won very comfortably by three lengths. Lady Pictavia was the smartest to begin but once the field had settled down, Sherwood Maid showed the way from Dramatist. Coming into the straight Sherwood Maid was followed by Dramatist. Lady Ruthex and Lady Pictavia. Dramatist and Lady Ruthex had a great '•attic for second place, only half a head separating them as they passed the post. Promotion was fourth followed by Belle Merc, Bofors, Vaalsworth and Kanaquaire. Ella Lee was left badly in the first division and Sobriquet suffered the same fate in the second division.
