Allied Statements On German Policy
LONDON, Thu. til a.m.).—Divergence in recent weeks between public pronouncements of the Allied High Commissioners in Germany is the main issue which the British High Commissioner (General Sir Brian Robertson) is expected to discuss on a visit to London. Twice during October members of the American Embassy in London have called at the Foreign Office to explain away statements made by the American High Commissioner in Germany (Mr John McCloy) who, on his own initiative, has come out in favour of an end to dismantling and of extension to international control of coal and steel production of the Western Allied powers. A Foreign Office spokesman today said that on October 10 Mr Julian Holmes, United States Minister in London, called on the head of the German Department, British Foreign Office (Sir Ivone Kirkpatrick) who repeated the British view that the piesent dismantling programme must be continued and expressed anxiety that there should be maintained a “coordinated and consistent Allied policy’.’ . . , Reuters diplomatic correspondent says that it is very definitely the British view that such delicate questions as the future dismantling and control of the Ruhr must be settled between the Allies before the views of one High Commissioner, which do not have tripartite support, are made public. A Foreign Office spokesman today said that no peace treaty for Western Germany is under consideration.
