State And Private Mill At Murupara

ROTORUA, Fri. (Sp.)— A combination of state and private capital and management would make a better job of the Murupara pulp-mill project than state ownership alone could manage, said the National member for Bay of Plenty (Mr W. Sullivan), in an election address at Kaingaroa last night.

With the extensive exotic timber resources in New Zealand, a mill must be erected immediately, giving New Zealand the opportunity of rivalling Canada in the world supply of paper pulp, he said. Mr Sullivan stated that the National Party did not know the full economics of the Murupara project, but he considered that the Government did not know either, as a full report had not been tabled in the House, but it was accepted that the mill must be built.

The National Party would continue to pay the subsidy to mill owners for overtime to ensure the housing of the people.
