Harbour Board To Aid Onerahi Regatta

The Whangarei Harbour Board today agreed to cooperate with the Onerahi Regatta Committee in making arrangements for the speedboat and rowing regatta to be held at Port Whangarei in December. The board was asked to agree to the building of a temporary slip which cpuld be used to haul out competing boats. The board received advice from the Whangarei County Council to -the effect that the boatshed sites under dispute at Ngunguru were on a road reserve which was bounded by highwater mark.

As the land on which the sheds were built was a county responsibility, the board resolved to waive all rights to the income from the sites and leave the administration of the area to the council.

The board received a request from commercial fishermen in Whangarei for extra facilities at the fishermen’s jety, which they asked should be extended to Victoria Bridge, so providing room for single berths and avoiding doubling up .on the jetty. Ar. undertaking to pay a reasonable annual fee for the jetty was given by the fishermen. The board resolved to investigate the question of costs involved in constructing the jetty, and to obtain returns of fish handled over the wharf. A donation of £3 was made to the Salvation Army appeal. WATERSIDE FACILITIES.

Every effort is being made to have the work of erecting the waterside workers’ utility building proceeded with without any further delay, the board’s architect (Mr A. P. Morgan) advised. A request for continuance of the service of providing a steam crane on the Port Whangarei wharf was received from Messrs Winstone Ltd. The firm operates the scows which carry the coal for the Dairy Coi, Ltd., and it was the considered opinion of the scowmasters that, while ships’ gear could be used for loading when the tide was in, it would be impossible to handle coal cargoes at low water. The board resolved to investigate the possibility of obtaining a boiler to replace the present one which is liable to be condemned at the next, survey, and to carry out certain repairs ordered by the surveyor.
