Whangarei Harbour Board Figures
Revenue received by the Whangarei Harbour Board for September was £IBO9 compared with £1874 in 1948. The greater proportion of the income, amounting to £IOB3, was derived from Portland shipping. This slight drop was a reflection of the decreased tonnage handled in and out during the month. Although 88 vessels were entered and cleared in 1949, compared with 78 in September 1948, the registered tonnage of all vessels showed a decrease from 13,455 J tons to 11,5791 this year. Imported tonnage fell from 00961 tops to 5660 j tons. Coal was the major import, with 4006 J tons, while sand totalled 533 tons, wines and spirits 149 tons, and potatoes 1133 tons. EXPORTS DECREASE
Exports showed a decrease from 12,3.021 tons in September, 1943, to 12,081| tons in the same period of 1949. Cement from the Portland works amounted to 10,9591 tons and butter 667 tons.
Fireclay and lime also figured the export list with 1473 and 157 tons. Pilotage was provided for three colliers—the Karepo twice and the Kaitahi by the harbourmaster-pilot (Captain E. S. Ross). Servicing was carried out on the Wellington Rock Buoy, Passage Island, Frenchman and Onerahi lights during the month.
