Miss C. Smith Beats Miss Kernot

WELLINGTON, Thu. (P.A.) .—After being one down at the turn and then one up after the seventeenth, Miss Clair Smith, former Invercargill player, became the first New Zealander to score a victory over one of the visiting Australian women golfers when she beat the manager (Miss B. Kernot) in a tense finish at the 19th in the first round today of the Wellington women’s provincial championships at Heretaunga.

Scoring today was generally not as good as in yesterday’s qualifying rounds. There was a misty rain and the greens were slower than yesterday. Miss J. Fletcher (Australia) beat Mis£ K.
