Record U.K. Birth Rate

LONDON, Fri. (11 a.m.)—Britain’s birth rate for the year ended March 31, 1948, was the highest since 1921, Sir Wilson James, chief medical officer, reported today. The rate was 20.5 per 1000 of population. The infant mortality rate at 41 per 1000 live births was the lowest ever.

There were also substantial falls in the still-birth and maternal mortality rates. There were 707 deaths from poliomyelitis—nearly two-thirds of them being among people over 15 years.
