Reid Passes 1000 Runs , Burtt lakes 100th Wicket

BIRMINGHAM, Fri. (11 a.m.).—The chief points of interest about the drawn match between New Zealand and Warwickshire were: Burtt took four wickets to reach a total of 101, and Reid hit fsl not out, to reach 1035 runs, becoming the sixth member of the team to pass four figures, the others being Hadlee, Wallace, Donnelly, Scott and Sutcliffe.

The New Zealander, Pritchard, now a Warwickshire professional, took his 100th wicket of the season, and, Hollies. who previously reached that total, including test matches, also collected 100 for his county. Warwickshire began (he final day by adding 61 in 40 minutes, and then declaring with nine for 395. Burtt took his 100th wicket when Cave, deputising for Cowie, caught Kardar, the Indian left-hander, at short mid-on.

GREAT MOMENT The New Zealand team gathered around him and patted him on the back and shook his hand, while specta ors applauded. It was a great moment for him Donnelly also caught Grove on the boundary, to enable Burtt to start on his second century. In their second innings New Zealand scored two for 280. Sutcliffe batted for only 20 minutes and then, for the fifth time on the tour, he played on. Grove sent him a good ball about six inches wide of the off stump and he snicked it on to his stumps with the inside edge of his bat. The stumps were spreadeagled. They were quite a sight and Sutcliffe glanced back at them over his shoulder as he walked away and grinned. REID DROPPED TWICE Rabone, who began brightly, and Reid then put on 135 in 2hr lOmin. Reid began quietly and slowly and, after getting sight of the ball, hit powerfully, with an accent on his strong hooking and pulling. He was dropped by Grove at forward square leg off Pritchard when he was 40, and this was the only chance he gave until he was 116, when he was dropped by Walton at midwicket off the Aucklander, Don Taylor.

With Reid scoring freely, Rabone marked time at 25, and was half an hour before adding to his score. He reached 50 in two hours.

Safely past this points his ambition was to hit a six; but he was caught by Gardner at mid-on when Townsend, who had been bowling well, began a second spell. Pritchard raised his eyebrows at Reid when the Wellington boy pulled him for a lovely six right into the crowd. LEAD WIPED OFF By lunch-time New Zealand had scored 94 in 92 minutes, thereby wiping off the Warwickshire lead of 91, and after Rabone had gone, Smith, who was trying to curb that slip-slash of his, began very quietly and lyReid reached his century in 2hrs 45m (14 fours and one six). He took a single off Hollies to reach his 1000 and then continued hitting powerfully all round the wicket. The pitch was almost as docile as on the previous day and none of the Warwickshire bowlers could do much with it. Reid and Smith put on 125 in lhr 25m, in which time Smith hit 45. Reid batted 3hr 35m for his 151 (22 fours, one six). CROP OF INJURIES The game produced a crop of injuries for the New Zealanders. Cowie strained a leg muscle again and will have to rest, Rabone strained a muscle in the waist, Cresswell injured a thumb, Burtt was hit on the nose, Hadlee on the chest and Sutcliffe barked a shin on the concrete edge when trying to save a boundary. Fall of Warwickshire wickets: 7 for 362, 8 for 392, 9 for 394. New Zealand, 1 for 20, 2 for 155.
