Jury Fails To Agree
AUCKLAND, oat. (Sp.i— The jury failed to agree on the charges against a tank-truck driver, Jack Crutchley, 24 (Mr Leary and Mr Hillyer) in the Supreme Court yesterday. The trial was conducted by Mr Justice Stanton, who ordered a new trial at the next sessions of the court. Bail was renewed. Crutchley was charged with the theft of 455 gallons of petrol from his employer, the Atlantic Union Oil Company, and with obtaining a cheque for £'3s by fraud from a service station owner. In evidence, Crutchley said he had paid £BOO for a motor car last October and the house he was building had cost £4OO beyond the rehabilitation loan. About £350 had passed through a bankbook of his in 18 months. He had got this money from the sale of motor cars, from his wife and from betting at the races. He was very successful at the races. Many of the Crown witnesses, including two detectives, had been telling lies against him.
