Borough Well Served With Buses, Committee Finds

FROM the point of view of service, the borough was well looked after with buses. . , This was the finding of an investigating committee of the Whangarei Residents and Ratepayers’ Association. The committee, which comprised Messrs F. Moore, G. Petley and C. Parkes, tabled a report at last night’s monthly meeting.

The report said it was apparent that the bus company had sought to overcome the difficulty complained of by running buses for the three northern areas almost simultaneously during the busy hours. This would tend to spread the load of first-section passengers evenly- . , , . The busiest time ot day was obviously 5.5 p.m. when special firstsection” buses were operated. Residents in the Avenues might have a case in claiming for a service around their area, and Morningside and Anzac Road residents had a claim for at least an extra bus in the mornings and afternoons of'weekdays, in addition to some kind of week-end service, the report continued. Mr Moore interviewed the manager of the bus company (Mr A. R. Wilkinson) who said that a new timetable incorporating several new times was in the process of being compiled. He said that the provision of weekend buses to Morningside had proved uneconomical as the number of passengers did not warrant the paying of double time to drivers. Other business included:— MOTOR CAMP.— As the result of an appeal made at last month’s meeting, one family living in the William Jones Motor Camp had been placed in a cottage, reported the president (Mr S. Hartnell). Mr Hartnell said it was possible that another family would be shifted in the near future. At last Tuesday's meeting the Bor-

ough Council decided to close the motor camp to all except bona fide tourists and campers. LETTER BOX. The Whangarei CPO wrote stating that in pursuance of the association’s request receiving boxes would be placed at Leith Street and at the corner of Main’s Avenue and Cairnfield Road. Several other suggestions for both boxes and stampvending machines to be established in other parts of the borough were dismissed. TELEPHONE BOX.— The request for a telephone box to be erected on the corner of Leith Street and Morningside Road has been referred by the CPO to its telegraph engineer for consideration, the association was informed. BANFF STREET.— The state of disrepair of Banff Street was brought to the notice of the association by a petition, signed by 10 residents of the street. The petition claimed that, because of the popularity of the street as an entrance into Mair Park, it had slipped into a deplorable state. The matter will be referred to the Borough Council. RAILWAY RD. SEWER PIPE.— Suggestions that the sewer pipe alongside the bridge in Railway Road should be wrapped in barbed-wire and a plank footpath erected on the bridge will be sent to the council. It was stated that the pipe was a menace to small children who persisted in walking along it and who might easily fall into the creek below.
