Some Relief For Butchers

WELLINGTON, Fri. (P.A.) The Price Tribunal announced today that the decontrolled period for fresh meat prices which, under Price Order No. 965 extends from September 1 to November 30. is to be advanced to take effect immediately. There will therefore be no control over prices for fresh beef, veal, mutton, pork or lamb until the price order again becomes effective on December Ist. Fresh meat sundries (kidneys, liver, tongue, tripe, etc.) will, however, be subject to maximum prices as set out in Price Order No. 963. Prices for frozen meat will continue to be controlled and ample supplies are being made to the trade. The Master Butchers’ Federation has assured the Price Tribunal of its cooperation in ensuring that their members stock and handle this class of meat in order that it will be available to the public when desired. The statement added that the Price Tribunal had taken this step in advancing the decontrolled period because unusual livestock shortages had brought about such increased prices at auction that retail butchers could not continue to operate without some relief. The amended price order Will be gazetted at the earliest possible opportunity.
