Canadian Ship Declared Black
AUCKLAND, Sat. <Sp.>. - At a monthly stop-work meeting yesterday members of the Auckland Harbour Board Employees’ Union -decided to declare the freighter Ottawa Valley a black ship until a satisfactory settlement is reached in the Canadian Seamen’s Union dispute. The union decided ’to carry out a recommendation of the executive of the Transport Workers’ Federation not to work the ship because members of the crew belong to the Seafarers' International Union, a rival American union which has manned ships boycotted -by the Canadian Seamen's Union during their strike. If the decision is applied, no tugs will be available to move the ship from the stream where it is at present awaiting a berth as crews of tugs are members of the Harbour Board Employees’ Union.
It would also mean that no waterservice would be given to the ship and unionists would not handle her lines or open up wharf sheds lo receive her cargo. The ship has already been declared black by the executive of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union and will not be worked by Auckland watersiders. She is expected to berth next week.
