Dangerous New Year's Eve Prank
KAIKOHE, Sat. (Sp.)—At fi o’clock last New Year’s morning, a motorist ran into two wires drawn across a bridge on the Maungatnpere--Kaikohe main highway at Awarua and damaged his car. Yesterday, more than six months later, a Maori labourer named Taylor Matthews, aged 24. pleaded guilty before Mr W. C. Harley, S.M.. to having placed an obstruction in the form of No. 8 fencing wire across the bridge, thereby endangering life and limb.
He was fined £2. court costs 10'-
Sergeant H. Sargent, of Kaikohc. said the bottom wire had punctured the radiator of the car while the top one had damaged the mascot. This was a prevalent type of offence on New Year's Eve in this district, he told the court.
The same morning a bus driver had reported obstructions on other bridges on the same highway. These had included cream cans, wires and whole gates. The sergeant said it was dear that others must have been with Matthews at the time of his offence.
