Cinders From Funnel Caused Condesa Fire
AUCKLAND, Wed., A sudden shower of red-hot cinders from the ship's funnel, carried aft by a southerly breeze, is stated to have caused the fire in the shelter in the ’tween deck section of the No 5 hatch in the motor ship Condesa at the Export Wharf yesterday. A blow-back in the engine draught system caused a shower of cinders, which floated down the open hold immediately aft of the funnel and quickly set alight to the muslin covers on many carcases of mutton. Between 2000 and 3000 carcases were affected by the fire and will be inspected by Government officials at Westfield Freezing Works today. It is thought that much can be salvaged. \ The Condesa, which was not damaged, continued normal loading today and is expected to sail for Britain early next week.
