Gentlemen Skittled
' LONDON, Wed. (12.50 p.m.) what is virtually a test trial, the cream of Britain’s amateur cricket talent was skittled at Lords today, the first day of the matcn Gentlemen v. Players. The South African Clive Van Ryneveld was top-scorer with 18 for his side, which had no excuse for its disappointing exhibition. England’s team for the third test against New Zealand will be chosen at the end of the game, but the only thing learned by the selectors was that Denis Compton is a capable captain.
He handled his bowling skilfully, and set his field cleverly. Evans kept wickets brilliantly to take four catches and Hollies flighted his slows admirably for five wickets for 32. The Players also batted feebly until Compton, Close and Evans improved matters.
Scores: Gentlemen, first innings, 105 (Van Ryneveld 18, Edrich 7, Simpson 6, Yardley 7, Mann 17; Hollies 5 for 32). Players, first innings, 6 for 155 (Compton 33, Close 27 not out, Evans 29 not out).
