'Peace Eludes Us,, Security Nowhere'
WELLINGTON, Tue, (Sp.).— “The peace to r which we fought eludes us and the security for which we hoped is nowhere to be found, so there must still be sacrifices which those who are partners in great causes look to one another to share,” said the High Commissioner for the Unjted Kingdom' (Sir Patrick Duff) at a farewell reception at Parliament House, Wellington. , _ , , "In these days of so much douot and of so much danger, you in New Zealand and we in Britain, both individually and collectively, as well as the other members of the British Commonwealth and Empire, have need for one another.
“We have all recently emerged from the most devastating war in history. "The unequal hurts which nations suffer in war are not all/ caused by the shells and bombs which fell unequally at the time. “There are other destructive agencies and other sacrifices. "Some of these are like delayed action bombs which keep on inflicting damage for long periods afterwards.
"Such are the economic stresses and trials from which Great Britain in an especial manner, and more than most of her friends and allies, suffers.”
Sir Patrick referred to the countless ties New Zealand had with Britain and his own connection with this country. .He said that it was a wonderful thing from the moment when he arrived how familiar the New Zealand scenery was.
