350 Nurses Needed For Auckland

AUCKLAND, Tue. (Sp.). Staff shortages in the four major and six minor Auckland hospitals deprive the city of 584 beds of a total of 2405 beds. The superintendent-in-chief to the Auckland Hospital Board (Mr Selwyn Kenrick) said this in his annual report presented to the Auckland Hospital Board last night. Mr Kenrick stated that more than 22,000 patients were admitted to the hospitals under the board’s charge and the controlling factor for larger numbers was the shortage of 350 nurses, as sufficient beds were available. Mr Kenrick said the waiting lists for surgical operations was too long for a country boasting of free medical service, but all lists except for tbnsilectomies had been reduced during the year. Tonsil operations had been left in abeyance on account of the infantile paralysis epidemic and the shortage of ear, nose and throat surgeons.
