COMMITTEE FOR RSA SOCIAL CLUB

THE constitution of the Whangarei branch of the Returned Services’ Association has been amended to provide for the administration of the social club and club property by a club property committee which will be directly responsible to the members. ■ , This action was taken by a special general meeting of the branch held last night as the first step in the actual building of the clubhouse on the Lovers’ Lane property. 1

For the first two years of the club’s activities the executive of the RSA will appoint a chairman and two members of the committee. Three members were elected by the general meeting last night, and it was left to the committee to co-opt the remaining members to bring the strength to 11 men. A provision in the new club’s constitution is that one representative on the committee must be an ex-naval-man, a second an Air Force ex-over-seas serviceman, and the third a Maori ex-serviceman.

The four members appointed by the general meeting were Messrs H. Hadfield (Maori representative), H. Rodgers, N. Fletcher and H. G. Field. A chairman and two other members will be appointed at tonight’s meeting of the general executive. Donations from members are coming in at a disappointing rate, as only 278 has been received so far in answer to the appeal launched at the beginning of the financial year. Estimated cost of the extensions and modifications to the property in Lovers’ Lane is £3500, of which £I2OO will - be a Government subsidy. Several members said they were loath to borrow too much in the early stages of the club’s activities, but the general feeling was that the project must be proceeded with as the branch has reached a stage where it must either go ahead or go back.
