U.N. Observer Dies In Plane Crash

HAIFA, Sun. (11 a.m.)—The chief French United Nations observer in Palestine (Colonel Queru) was killed when his plane was shot at near Gaza, says the United Press. Colonel Queru was killed instantly and the pilot, who was seriously wounded, died shortly afterwards. It is not determined whether the plane was shot at in flight and crashlanded, or whether it made an emergency landing and was fired at on the runway. United Nations officials said Haifa headquarters sent notice of the flight to Gaza 24 hours ahead, but communications difficulties prevented a landing clearance being received in time.

The Egyptian Government, in a cable to the United Nations mediator (Count Bernadotte), stating that Egyptian machine-guns shot down. Colonel Queru’s plane, expressed the Government’s regret, says the Stockholm correspondent, of the British United Press.

The cable stated that the United Nations markings were not visible and the plane was flying at 3000 ft in the wrong corridor for access to Gaza.
