Takahiwai Leaguers Beat Whangaruru

Takahiwai seniors defeated Whangaruru by 17 to 7 in a hard League game played at Jubilee Park, Whangarei, on Saturday. The only try in the first half was scored by the Takahiwai winger. Clyde, from a movement commenced on the 25 by Kepa. Play was even in the first spell, but after the break Takahiwai forced the pace, with Kepa, at first live-eighths cutting inside whenever there was an opening or clearing smartly to set Clyde and Ripia going. Carlton Faki scored the second try and R. Peters followed with a penalty for Whangaruru. It was a day out for the Peters family, with five of them on the field playing excellent football. Rata crossed again, forcing his way through the whole Whangaruru pack and Ripia raised the flags, making the score 9 —2. A BATTLING TRY H, Peters scored a real battling try for Whangaruru in a move in which most of the team handled. Half a dozen players had to be removed from the top of the heap before referee W. Hedley could discover who was on the ball. Final try of the game was scored for Takahiwai by H. Pirihi with a short grubber-kick and hard follow up which caught the defenders flatfooted. On the Takahiwai side G. Pirihi gave his backs a fair share of the ball from the set scurms and full use was made of it by the line. For Whangaruru • the Peters, all five of them, played well, and Thomas was dangerous on the wing. Reti, at first five, was a good counter to the nippy Kepa. The game was played hard and in a good spirit, the score being a fair indication of the Takahiwai superiority on the day. TAKAHIWAI JUNIORS WIN The curtain-raiser was a bright game in which Takahiwai beat Portland 21—8. As usual the Takahiwai boys handled well, with Johnson, Hill ,Erceg and Newton, bn, their fast combination, always on the attack. Latimer, who played on the side of the scrum, scored 10 of the Takahiwai points, mostly from moves in which he joined the back line. Papich displayed sounll footwork and amazing speed when he had a clear run, but his handling was not reliable. .

Wells, the Portland winger, did not have the opportunities he needed to display his form, but it was obvious that, fed by inside backs who will run straight and give him room, he is a sure scorer and sound defender City seniors travelled to Hikurangi for their match, but Hikurangi did not field a team.

Hikurangi juniors defeated Ngunguru 35—18.
