Collier Unloading At Portland Today
Work commenced this morning on the collier Kakapo, which arrived at Portland on Friday afternoon with 1000 tons of coal for the cement works and was not worked on Saturday. The Northern Steamship Company’s m.v. Towai is expected in Whangarei on Wednesday and another collier is due to arrive on the same day. This will give the Whangarei waterside workers five consecutive days’ work if the ships arrive on time. The arrival of the coal was opportune, as the cement works had been operating only two of the four kilns and was almost out of coal.
