£l6oo In Aid For Russia Bone Astray

A.UCKLAND. Fri. (Sp.)—The Auckland Trades Council has decided to proceed with the audit of its books, since £I6OO which its former secretary (Mr W. Ashton) was instructed to send to the Soviet Legation for aid to Russia. has presumably gone astray. The secretary of the council (Mr H. S. Gallagher) stated this at the monthly meeting last night. The money in question was that collected in the ‘Sheepskins for Russia" campaign, but, because of the shipping difficulty, Mr Ashton was authorised to send the money to the Soviet Legation to help reconstruct the bombedout areas. No reply had been received by the council to a letter sent on May 21 asking the legation for information about the moneys. The secretary of the Federation of Labour (Mr K. McL. Baxter) then sent Ihe legation a letter explaining the situation and asking for a reply. On June 14 he received a telephone call from one of the women officers in the Soviet Legation. She said that no moneys had been paid to the legation. When asked for a reply in writing she said the telephone call was ihe official reply. By 66 votes to 48 the Press was allowed to remain.
