Weipoa Preservation
“Although the public may use highways through the State Forest reserves, they are, nevertheless by law subject to prosecution and fines by penetrating any reserves without permission. Such regulations apply to Waipoua today. ’’ This argument is one of many advanced by the Waipoua Preservation Society in a leaflet at present being circulated in a further endeavour to have Waipoua preserved as a national park. It is stated that the society would not be satisfied with the suggested strip of some 4,000 acres bordering the highway because this was not typical of the virgin kauri stands and had already been cut over. Narrow strips such as these were unlikely to be capable of permanent preservation.
