Mr F. W. Harris (Conservative) 36,200 Mr Harold Nicolson (Labour . 24,536 Air Vice-Marshal Bennett (Lib-
Majority for Harris .. .. ... 11,644 The vacancy was caused by the resignation of Mr H. U. Willink. Seventy-five per cent of the electorate voted. Air Vice-Marshal Bennett forfeits his deposit. The Conservative majority at the general elections in 1945 was only 609. Mr Harris is a member of the Surrey County Council and Croydon Borough Council and a director of several companies. s N He has stated that he is in favour of trades unions, opposes class hatred and will sponsor Empire development and the Industrial Charter.
At the general election in 1945 the polling in North Croydon was as follows: Mr H. U. Willink (Conservative), 23,419; Miss M. Billson (Labour), 22,810; Sub-Lieutenant J. M. Howard (Liberal), 10,714. '' _ .
